· Burglars break into a house, apartment or condo every 11 seconds.
· Estimated burglaries nationwide: 2,329,950.
· 60% of residential burglaries occurred during the daylight hours.
Economic Impact Of Burglaries:
· Losses experienced by burglary victims estimated at $3.1 billion.
· Average loss per residential burglary was $1,350.
Time of Year For Burglaries:
· July had the greatest number of burglaries recorded.
· February had the least amount of burglaries recorded.
Burglaries By Region:
· Believe it or not…The South was the region with the highest volume of burglaries, reported 42% of all burglaries committed.
· The West reported 23%.
· The Midwest reported 21%.
· The Northeast had the least amount of burglaries, reporting 14% of all burglaries committed and the greatest decrease in burglaries, reporting a seven percent drop from 1997. ( However, these numbers are a few years old… the bad economy has caused the increase in home break ins in the North East. Even our beautiful Atlanta has been affected as you see on the evening news each night)
Burglaries Based by Classification
· 65% of all burglaries were by forcible entry (use of force of any kind to unlawfully enter a structure for the purpose of committing a theft or felony-entering through the use of tools, breaking windows and forcing doors, windows or locks).
· 28% were by unlawful entry (entry with no force, achieved thru an open door or window).
· 7% were reported as an attempted forcible entry (attempt made at forcible entry interrupted when burglar is frightened off).
